Shipping from China to Switzerland: What I Wish I Knew Before My First Shipment

Shipping from China to Switzerland isn’t like shipping to Germany — one missing document can cost you weeks at customs.

Switzerland isn’t in the EU. That one sentence would have saved me a lot of trouble two years ago. When I shipped my first batch from a supplier in Shenzhen to Zurich…

The CHF 62 Question Everyone Asks

Switzerland charges 8.1% import VAT on most goods. There’s a reduced rate of 2.6% for food, books, and medicines, but for regular consumer products, you’re looking at 8.1%.

But here’s what actually matters: VAT only kicks in if the total owed is more than CHF 5. In practice, that means goods worth less than about CHF 62 usually pass through duty-free. Above that, the full amount is taxable.

One more thing: if you’re selling more than CHF 100,000 a year into Switzerland in low-value goods, you need to register for Swiss VAT and charge it at checkout. Below that, the customer pays on delivery.

What I Actually Pay for Shipping

For a typical shipment — say 50kg of consumer goods from Shenzhen — here’s what the numbers look like:

Air freight gets it there in 4–7 days at roughly $4.20–$8.60 per kg. If you’re not in a rush, sea freight LCL runs about $90–$200 per CBM and takes 35–45 days.

For larger shipments, sea-air combined (sea to a European gateway port, then rail or truck into Switzerland) takes 30–40 days and costs significantly less than pure air freight. Switzerland is landlocked, so all ocean shipments transit through Genoa, Hamburg, or Rotterdam before reaching Zurich or Basel.

For B2B and e-commerce, DDP sea freight door-to-door is the cleanest option. LCL DDP all-in rates run $140–$290 per CBM, which covers factory pickup, export customs, ocean freight, Swiss customs filing, import duty, VAT, and final delivery.

The Paperwork That Will Make or Break Your Shipment

Swiss customs isn’t impossible, but they are thorough. Here’s what you need:

Commercial invoice — must include buyer details, full product name, HS code, unit price, total value, and country of origin. All information must be consistent across documents.

Packing list — every box needs its weight, dimensions, and contents listed.

Customs declaration form — CN22 for lower-value shipments, CN23 for higher-value or heavier ones.

If your goods qualify under the China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement, you can get zero or reduced import duties with a Form S certificate of origin. The goods need to be shipped directly to Switzerland — no processing or repacking in transit.

And if you’re importing anything with wooden packaging — pallets, crates — it has to be heat-treated or fumigated with the IPPC mark. Without it, your shipment gets returned or destroyed.

What I’d Do Differently

Use DDP if you can. With Delivered Duty Paid, your freight forwarder handles customs clearance, VAT, and final delivery. You get one price and no surprises.

Consolidate if you’re using multiple suppliers. If you’re buying from three or four factories, having everything consolidated at one warehouse in China saves you from paying separate customs entries on arrival.

Check your HS codes before you ship. Switzerland uses its own tariff codes beyond the standard six digits. An error here means the wrong duty rate — or your shipment getting held.

Don’t lowball the declared value. Swiss customs has seen every trick. If your declared value is obviously below market price, they’ll audit it.
